Chapter 10: sexuality and the life cycle: childhood and adolescence. Capacity of human body to show sexual responses is present from birth. Self-stimulation: infants are often observed touching their own genitals, rhythmic manipulation of genitals associated with adult masturbation does not occur until ages 2 - 3. Non-genital sensual experiences: infants delight in putting things in their mouths, being cuddled or rocked can also be a sensuous experience for some infants. Gender-identity: awareness of being a boy or a girl motivates a child to be like other members of that group. Marked increase in sexual interest and activity. Children increasingly gain experience with masturbation and learn that it is something that must be done in private. Some children first learn about heterosexual behavior by seeing/hearing their parents engage in sexual intercourse (primal scene experience) freud believed that this experience could inhibit a child"s subsequent psychosexual development. Same-sex behavior is a normal part of sexual development during late childhood and preadolescence.
