Idea that the mind and body function independently although they might interact. In early 20th century this theory was challenged: freud linked the mind and body to explain hysteria a conditioned he believed that unconscious psychological causes unexplained physical complaints such as weakness and paralysis. In the 1930s-1940s psychiatrists dunbar and alexander proposed associations between certain personality patterns and speci c medical diseases: psychological con icts produce anxiety which causes the nervous system to create an organic problem. From these in uences came the biopsychosocial model. Rst the person assesses the potential harm/threat primary appraisal strongly in uenced by a persons values, beliefs, experiences. Next, they identify available skills to cope with or overcome the possible neg. outcomes secondary appraisal: coping strategies fall into 2 categories; problem focused coping and emotion focused coping.
