Major depressive disorder: most commonly diagnosed and severe depression, marked general loss of interest and experience of pleasure, average duration if untreated is ~9 months. Diagnostic criteria for dysthymia: depressed mood for most of the day for more days than not for at least 2 years (1 year for kids, presence, while depressed of 2 or more of following, poor appetite/overeating. It got so bad he considered suicide meet deadlines etc: after mde resolved he still returned to chronic milder state of depression, diagnosed with double depression. Additional defining criteria for depressive disorders: specifiers may or may not accompany depressive disorder when they do they help determine best treatment. In addition to rating severity clinicians use 8 basic specifiers: with psychotic features (mood-congruent or incongruent)
