Document Summary
Chapter 4 social perception: perceiving the self and others. What we see in others: social perception. Attributions judgments about why an event occurred or why someone behaved in a certain way (casual judgments) Attribution theories are models that attempt to delineate the processes underlying judgments of cause. Harold kelley suggested that people often make casual judgments in a relatively scientific manner as if they were intuitive scientists (i. e. make repeated observations, testing everyday casual questions) When individual have personal experience with a situation, they usually assume that most other people would respond similar to themselves, and they draw conclusions about the cause of behaviour based on this assumption. False consent effect a general tendency for individual to assume that other people share their attitudes and behaviours to a greater extent than is actually the case. Perceivers overestimate the consensus (agreement) that exists for their attitudes and actions. We tend to interact with other people who agree with us.
