Stress in 3 different ways: as a stimulus. Stressors elicit stimuli/ events that place strong demands on us: a response. Can"t concentrate b/c you"re worried: organism-environment interaction. Stress is a pattern of cognitive appraisals, physiological responses, and behavioural tendencies that occurs in response to a perceived imbalance b/w situational demands and the resources needed to cope with them. Stressors place demands on us that endanger well being we have to adapt some way. Catastrophic events occur unexpectedly and affect a lot of people. Major negative events victim of a major crime, death, career failure. Life event scales quantify the amount of life stress that a person has experienced over a period of time. Any life event that requires adaptation (-ive or +ive in nature), is a stressor. Starting point for the stress response is our appraisal of the situation and its implications for us.
