Consciousness our moment-to-moment awareness of ourselves and the environment o. Subjective, dynamic, self-reflective ¢ral to our sense of identity. Selective attention focuses conscious awareness on some stimuli to the exclusion of others. Scientists use self-report, physiological &behavioural measures to operationally define states of consciousness. Freud believed that the mind has a conscious, pre-conscious &unconscious level: unconscious=reservoir of unacceptable desires &repressed experiences according to freud. Controlled (effortful) processing the voluntary use of attention and conscious effort: required for learning new tasks. Automatic processing activities that can performed with little or no conscious effort: makes divided attention possible. Divided attention the ability to perform more than one activity at the same time. Emotional &motivational processes also can operate nonconsciously &influence behaviour. Blindsight a disorder in which people are blind in part of their visual field yet, in special tests, respond to stimuli in that field despite reporting that they cannot see those stimuli. Mind consists of separate but interacting information-processing modules.
