Document Summary
Changes in biological, physical, psychological and behavioural processes as we age. There are 4 broad issues that guide developmental research. Genetic transmission of physical and psychological traits from parents to children. Threadlike coloured bodies in nucleus of each cell; made up of dna. Genes: speci c areas on a strand of dna that carry heredity information. Environmental in uences that cause abnormal prenatal development. Miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight: critical and sensitive periods. Critical period an age range in which certain experience must occur for development to proceed normal or along a certain path. Sensitive period an optimal age range for certain experiences, but if those experiences occur at another time, normal development still be possible: continuity vs. discontinuity. Or is it a discontinuous, progressing through qualitatively distinct stages, as when a creeping caterpillar emerges from its cocoon as a butter y: stability vs. change. Cohort = group born at same time. Cross-sectional compare different ages at same time.
