Sex refers to biological diferences between men and women. Gender relates to behavioural, cultural, psychological traits associated with one"s sex. Feminist movement arguing tradiional male deiniions of poliics is too narrow overlooked aspects of poliical system in which women were signiicant contributors. Increasingly began to work in factories, demanded right to enter contracts, own property, etc. Enfranchisement was followed by mother"s allowances, child welfare acts, divorce law, other reforms achieved through constant pressure of women"s rights groups. 1928 person"s case women declared qualiied people, can serve on senate: advance to cabinet appointments very slow, women typically in mayoralty posts and quasi-poliical communiies. Gradual improvements: 1944 federal family allowances act small monthly payment to help care for children, 1952 ontario equal pay legislaion, followed federally in 1954, birth control invenion 1960 led to changing criminal code laws in 1969. Small role but important in small-p poliics chariies, ngos, community groups, etc.
