Over past 3 decades, social movements have expanded the very definition of what is political and have promoted democratization of institutions that were once considered political. Made politics more inclusive by giving minorities a voice. Promote things that should be a universal right. Social movement seen as bad because it seems like they are undermining the role of the government -> complicates policy making, too demanding. Presumed to be successful, social movements must be professionalized and institutionalized. Millennium social movements are losing influence because they cannot sustain support from apathetic citizens. Engage in political/cultural struggle intended to break/expand boundaries of existing system. Not focused on specific issue but more identity based politics. Movements are not unitary actors but rather informal networks that link different players. When unorganized, movements they do not have a big impact. Media and public attention should not be only factor of movements. Resource mobilization is result of what resources a group can generate.
