Health Sciences 2300A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Adipose Tissue, Subcutaneous Tissue, Keratinocyte
Document Summary
Functions of the integumentary system: regulates body temperature, stores blood, protects body from external environment, detects cutaneous sensations, excretes and absorbs substances, synthesizes vitamin d. Composed of keratinized stratifies (many cells) squamous (scale-like) epithelium (thin) Intra-epidermal macrophage cells (langerhans cells: participate in immune system responses, tactile epithelial cells (merkel cells (sensory), function in the sensations of touch. Epidermis strata: basale, deepest layer, furthest away from the external environment, single row or cuboidal or columnar keratinocytes that contain scattered keratin intermediate filaments, most activity occurs at this layer, cell replication, keratinocytes are dividing. More superficial: more vesicles in this region than reticular, makes up one fifth of the of the thickness of the total layer. Contains thin collagen fibres and fine elastic fibres: reticular region (80%) Contains bundles of thick collagen fibres (reticular fibres), scattered fibroblasts, various wandering cells (macrophages) and some coarse elastic fibres: a lot of strength in the reticular region.
