Needs can be expressed in different ways, however it is important to be able to identify all needs to that they can be addressed appropriately through program planning. Needs assessment a systematic procedure for determining the nature and extent of problems experienced by a specific population that affect their health either directly or indirectly. Other names include community analysis and community assessment, while it is the most critical step due its provision of data that helps to define health problems, sets priorities, and establishes a baseline for the impact of the program. A needs assessment also helps to determine the capacity a community has to address specific needs, which helps to think about community strengths that can be mobilized. Also significant to identify the nature of relationships across various sectors such as education, healthcare, social services and various subgroups.
