Hearing loss is most profound disorder- can cause frustration withdrawal, depression marital discord. Usually occurs gradually, and most are not aware of the hearing loss. Sound: results from a disturbance in air particles caused by vibration of an elastic body such as a stereo speaker, bass drum, guitar, or vocal folds. Disturbance of particles occurs in back and forth motion creating a sound wave. Complete back and forth motion = cycle of vibration. Frequency: of sound wave refers to how fast the particles vibrate and its measured by the number of complete vibrations that occur per unit of time. Low frequency sounds have-small # of vibrations. When a sound has one frequency= pure tone. Noise= sound with no consistent vibration pattern. Waveform= back and forth motion represented graphically. Maximum disturbance on wave- amplitude and intensity(decibel scale- loudness) describe this. Deafness= minimal hearing or complete loss of hearing.
