The lower the value of the group index the better suited the soil is a subgrade material. A group index of 0 indicates a very good subgrade material and an index of 30 indicates a very poor subgrade material. 5. 4 you have been asked to determine if the soil at a given site is suitable for use as a pavement sub-base material. As a minimum a sieve analysis is required.
