Chapter 8 (all sections except ethics in experimentation ) Individuals studied in an experiment are often called subjects. The explanatory variables in an experiment are often called factors. Treatment any specific experimental condition applied to the subjects. Advantages of experiments: in experiments we can study the effects of the specific treatments of interest. By assigning subjects to treatments we can avoid confounding. Another is we can study the combined effects of several factors simultaneously. The interaction of several factors can produce effects that could not be predicted from looking at the effect of each factor alone. Experiments are the preferred way of examining the effect of one variable on another. Experiments are the preferred method for examining the effect of one variable on another. By giving the specific treatment of interest and controlling other influences, we can find cause and effect. In labs (controlled environment) simple designs (subjects > treatment > measure response) may work well.
