Once scientists have discovered the mutation that is responsible for that genetic disease, Dna technologies can be used to develop molecular tests to help diagnose those diseases. In the sickle cell mutation, there is a change in the restriction site of dna. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (rflps) when comparing different individuals, restriction enzyme-generated dna fragments of different lengths from the same region of the genome. These are analyzed through the process of southern blot analysis. Southern blot analysis technique in which labelled probes are used to detect specific dna fragments that have been separated by gel electrophoresis.
