Document Summary

18. 1 and 18. 2 in notes from population genetics. Mutations: a spontaneous and heritable change in dna. Effect on variation: introduces new genetic variation into a population; does not change allele frequencies quickly. A mutation can be a major source of heritable variation. For animals mutations are only heritable if they are within the cell lineage that produces gametes. For plants can only occur in meristem tissue. Deleterious mutations: alter an individual"s structure, function, or behaviour in harmful ways. Lethal mutations: cause great harm to organisms carrying them death. Neutral mutations: neither harmful nor helpful (often due to the redundancy of the genetic code) Gene flow: change in allele frequencies as individuals join a population and reproduce. Effect on variation: may introduce genetic variation form another population. Populations are not completely closed, and can be open to migration. Dispersal agents such as wind, are responsible for gene flow in most plant populations.
