Gsa pre lecture 5: basic structure of an amino acid and the di erent classes of amino acids, amino acids are all formed from the same fundamental structure. At one end is an amino group called the n terminal end (nh2) outlined in blue and the other is a carboxylic acid called the c terminal end (cooh) outlined in pink. In the middle is a carbon with an r group and an h attached. The r group represents the variable side chain (this is what di ers between amino acids: there are 20 di erent side groups/chains, di erent classes of amino acids: Primary structure: primary structure refers to the speci c and unique sequence/chain of amino acids that form a polypeptide. The primary sequence is determined by the nucleotide sequence of the proteins corresponding gene. Secondary structure: secondary structure refers to the twists and turns of the amino acid chain/sequence.
