Sediments form strata (layers) that differ and arranged in order in which they formed, youngest layers on top. Sometimes the strata have been inverted by geologic processes. No matter where found , a sedimentary stratum represent organisms that lived and died around same time. So you can know roughly the age of fossil because oldest on bottom and newest strata on top. Strata and fossils were used to form a time scale of history of earth. Note-know different types of fossils and how they were formed. Mounted fossil skeletons in museums- formed when dissolved minerals entered spaces within bone and then solidified. Fossils preserved in amber (tree resin) show fine details of organisms (insects) Plant fossils- moulds compressed shortly after death, 3d analysis is hard. Droppings (coprolites) and gastroliths (stone sin stomach used to grind food) Petrified forests - are frees fossilized by minerals.
