Document Summary

The father"s presence during labour seems to be associated with less pain and shorter length of labour. Three stages of labour: dilation and effacement: cervix opens at bottom of uterus (dilation) and flattens out (effacement); at delivery, should be dilated 10 centimetres (4 inches); tends to be about 80% effaced (1-3 centimetres) when labour starts. Stage one divided into two stages: latent phase (contractions are relatively far apart) and active phase (3-4 cm dilated and contractions are closer together and more intense. Last 2 centimetres of dilation is transition phase which is relatively brief, but the most painful. When delivering a first child, stage 1 can take 3-20 hours (average 8 hours) and is generally longer for women receiving anesthesia than for prepared childbirth. Anoxia: common problem where baby cannot get enough oxygen; can lead to brain damage, cerebral palsy, or mental retardation; can happen from failure of the umbilical cord"s circulation systems.
