DRAM 2100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Deeper Understanding
Document Summary
Swimming is a happy medium between the two. Competent informative speaking is a very valuable skill and this type of speaking is very common. General purpose makes all the difference; informative is to teach while persuasive is to convince. Informative speeches usually do not cause disagreement (some information does have the potential to cause disagreement without trying) Presenting all relevant sides to an issue in a neutral fashion focuses on teaching something new, interesting, or useful, not advocating for a specific viewpoint. No one is being told which choice to make; they are given as much information as possible so they can decide on their own. Informative speech may come before a persuasive speech because giving information about certain topic may cause audience to become concerned and desire a solution. When a speaker takes a firm stand, presents only one side without critique, or advocates for change, the speech becomes persuasive.
