Circulation: circulatory system: composed of pump(s), vessels & circulatory uid, essential for the maintenance of cell function, maintains homestasis. Blood moves through organs which regulate its contents: transports nutrients, wastes, gases & heat. Long-distance transport - intimate association with all tissues. Short-distance transport - diffusion: o & nutrients diffuse from blood tissue, co & wastes diffuse from tissue blood. The chambers are not completely separate, so some oxygenated blood mixes with deoxygenated blood. The chambers are completely separate, allowing for no mixing blood, which allows for high physical activity. Most ef cient system: blood vessels: circulate the blood throughout the body, arteries: carry blood away from the heart, towards capillaries. Thicker & more elastic than veins: arterioles: small branches of arteries, covering blood to capillaries, capillaries: microscopic vessels that penetrate the tissues. Consist of a single layer of cells that allows for exchange between the blood & interstitial uid. Smallest in size, but greatest in # greatest surface area.
