Survey research =most frequently used mode of gathering data in the social sciences. It consists of selecting a sample of respondents and administering a questionnaire or an interview to them. Respondent: a person who provides data for analysis by responding to a survey questionnaire. Surveys may be used for descriptive, explanatory, and exploratory purposes. Unit of analysis is usually the individual, but can be used for other units of analysis. Surveys are increasingly used for less legitimate purposes than social research, including marketing surveys and political surveys such as (cid:498)push polls(cid:499) Large surveys conducted to determine the amount of victimization in a society, violence against women, collect into on issues of income, employment etc. Questionnaire: a document containing questions and other types of items designed to solicit information appropriate to analysis: used primarily in survey research but also in experiments, field research, and other modes of observation. Most concepts are measured through questions and statements.
