Violations of social expectations are dealt with through mechanisms of social control: systematic practices developed by groups to encourage conformity and discourage deviance socialization, where individuals internalize societal norms and values. Negative sanctions, the punishing of rule-breakers and nonconforming acts. Deviance: any behavior, belief, or condition that violates cultural norms of the society or group in which it occurs. Crime: an act that violates criminal law and is punishable with fines, jail terms, and other sanctions. People feel strained when they are exposed to cultural goals they are unable to obtain because they do not have access to culturally approved means of achieving these goals. Illegitimate opportunity structures: richard cloward and lloyd ohlin. Circumstances that provide an opportunity for people to acquire through illegitimate activities what they cannot achieve through legitimate channels. E. g. some do not have greater access to illegitimate opportunity structures (such as theft, drug dealing, or robbery) than legitimate means.
