Picturing social problems chapter 7: crime and violence. Crime: any behaviour that, in a given time and place, is prohibited by applicable statutory law. When a law is violated, a crime is said to have been violated. Criminalization process: the process by which either a behaviour or an individual may be turned criminal by making acts illegal through legislation or judicial decision. Criminal laws: rules of conduct that de ne what"s criminal and provide for the punishment of violators; the formal rules about what a society"s members can and can"t do. Social norms: informal rules, guides and standards that establish what"s considered culturally desirable and appropriate in particular society. Social order: the prevalence of harmonious relationships; used synonymously with. This condition exists when rules are obeyed and social situations are controlled and predictable. Rules serve not only to indicate which behaviours are acceptable, but also to allow participants to anticipate the behaviour of others.
