Document Summary

In order to understand how the brain works, we need to do both behavioural and physiological experiments, bc of levels of analysis: a topic can be studied in various different ways, w each approach contributing another dimension. The whole brain -> structures within the brain -> chemicals that create electrical signals in these structures. In the 19th century, scientists applied special stains to the brain that increased the contrast b/w different tissues, and they saw the a network and called it the nerve net. They proposed the nerve net theory which said that signals could be transmitted through the net in all directions. This was because with the microscopes at that time, the nerves appeared to be continuous: then in the 1870"s, italian anatomist golgi developed a staining technique: only. Cell body: metabolic centre of the neuron, keeps the cell alive. Dendrites: they branch out from the cell body to receive signals from other neurons.
