Chapter 8: eating and sleep-wake disorders: focuses on the psychological disruptions of two of our relatively automatic behaviours, eating and sleeping. Medical consequences: cessation of menstruation, dry skin, brittle hair or nails, sensitivity or intolerance of cold temperatures, lanugo downy hair on the limbs and cheeks, cardiovascular problems. Associated psychological disorders: anxiety and mood disorders, co-occurs frequently with ocd, unpleasant thoughts are focused on gaining weight and the individual engages in a variety of behaviurs to rid herself of such thoughts, substance abuse. Anorexia: mostly female, onset also in adolescence (avg. age 13, once developed, its course seems more chronic than even bulimia, and it is more resistant to treatment. Causes of eating disorders: most dramatic causes of eating disorders and social and cultural. Dietary restraint: long-term dieting can cause preoccupation with food, these preoccupations with food can contribute to binge eating, female ballet dancers, gymnasts and tennis players are at higher risk of forming eating disorders.
