Exists in memory, organize the information regarding a particular concept, in uence how we process info relating to that concept, how to retrieve info. Self-reference remember better when it"s related to ourselves. Cognitive abilities take sensory info and turn it into a mental image -- self-concept. Other people can have di erent experiences and knowledge from us, theory of how the mind works. -> able to create a future self with these abilities. Children that reach about 18 months start to have the ability to realize the self.
