Document Summary

Prejudice is a hostile or negative attitude toward a distinguishable group, on the basis of generalizations, derived from faults or incomplete information; contains a cognitive, an emotional, and a behavioral component. Categorization is grouping of objects/people by key characteristics, and it"s fundamental to cognition. The fundamental category for social animals is us or them. By an early age, we can categorize by gender, age, race, they"re visual. Later, we learn to use them to decide who is us and who is them. After categorization, we apply labels to the categories that sum up the essence of a group, a stereotype: generalizing characteristics, motives, or behaviour to an entire group of people. The world out there vs the little pictures in our heads . When we stereotype, we allow those pictures to dominate our thinking: because the world is too complicated, we develop elegant and accurate narratives for our group and rely on simple ideas for other groups.
