Document Summary

One consequence of the fact that we are social animals is that we live in a state of tension between values associated with individuality and values associated with conformity. To be called an individualist or a nonconformist is to be designated, by connotation, as a (cid:862)good(cid:863) pe(cid:396)so(cid:374: synonymous word includes deviate. To be called a conformist, in our culture, is somehow to be designated as an (cid:862)i(cid:374)ade(cid:395)uate(cid:863) pe(cid:396)so(cid:374: synonymous word includes team player. We see an inconsistency in the way our society seems to feel about conformity and nonconformity. Several groups of students met for a discussion of the case history of a juvenile delinquent named johnny rocco. Each group was asked to discuss the case and suggest a treatment for johnny on a scale that (cid:396)a(cid:374)ged f(cid:396)o(cid:373) (cid:862)(cid:448)e(cid:396)(cid:455) le(cid:374)ie(cid:374)t t(cid:396)eat(cid:373)e(cid:374)t(cid:863) to (cid:862)(cid:448)e(cid:396)(cid:455) ha(cid:396)d t(cid:396)eat(cid:373)e(cid:374)t(cid:863) A typical group consisted of 6 real participants, and 3 participants who were paid confederates.
