He called that region the sensus communis, and he believed it to be the home of thought and judgment; its name may be the root of the modern term common sense. In the 1600s, the philosopher ren descartes promoted the first influential theory of dualism, the idea that mind and body are separate yet intertwined. The way descartes connected mind and body was at the time quite radical.
