5. 1 biological rhythms of consciousness: wakefulness and sleep. Consciousness - a person"s subjective awareness, including thoughts, perceptions, experiences of the world, and self-awareness. Adapted to the cycles in the environment. Infradian rhythm(longer than a day): circannual rhythm(yearly cycle), menstrual cycle(for humans), ultradian rhythms(more frequent rhythms) Circadian rhythms - daily cycles affecting physiological and behavioral processes -> sleep or awake at specific times, be hungry during some parts of the day, ability to concentrate better at certain times. Entrainment - when biological rhythms become synchronized to external cues. Endogenous rhythms - biological rhythms that are generated by our body independent of external cues. Circadian rhythms patterns do change with age. Rem sleep - from infancy and early childhood into adulthood -> need much less sleep. Ppl do show higher alertness and cognitive functioning during their preferred time of day. Polysomnography - a set of objective measurements used to examine physiological variables during sleep.
