Document Summary

Brings information to the brain that arise in the reality. The process of translating incoming sensory information into neural signals. Unfamiliar, novel stimuli often affect our survival thus have higher priority. Sensory adaptation - reduce our response to unchanging stimuli. Perception involved building simple sensory information into more complex perceptions. Interpreting sensory information that requires previous memories and knowledge. As stimuli become more complicated, we would tend to use top-down processing in addition to bottom. Psychophysics (study the relationship between stimuli and perception) The smallest stimuli that can be noticed in 50% of the time. Smallest difference that can be noticed in 50% of the time. As stimuli becomes large, difference need to be larger in order to be detected. It adds the cognitive process of decision making to the process of sensations. The actual intensity of the stimulus, which influences observer"s belief that the stimulus did occur. The individual"s criteria for deciding whether it occurred or not.
