Anxiety disorders: category of disorders involving excessive, irrational and maladaptive fear & nervousness. Often diagnosed in conjunction with other disorders. People often cope by limiting themselves to environments, activities, and people who make them feel safe and secure: but can stifle people"s growth & experiences. Fight-or-flight activates- evolutionarily beneficial: in modern society, stress activates fight-or-flight repeated throughout the day no longer functional for the purposes of survival, consistent, repeated strain on the body host of stress-related illnesses. Separation from everyday anxiety to a level of disorder: degree, duration, sources. Cannot control every situation to encounter: often have unstable, irritable moods, difficulty concentrating, and have sleep problems, convergence of stresses during major life changes precede onset of gad. Panic disorder: panic disorder: anxiety disorder characterized by occasional episodes of sudden, very intense fear (panic attack, anxiety occurs in short segments, but can be much more severe, panic attacks: rarely last for more than 10 minutes.
