Document Summary

105) structure and organization of the nervous system. The central nervous system: brain and spinal cord. The human brain is a three-pound structure made up of approximately 100 billion neurons. The spinal cord receives information from the brain and stimulates nerves extending into the body this causes movement. The spinal cord also gets info from the sensory nerves in the body and brings it back to the brain (except in the case of reflexes, which does not require the brain) The peripheral nervous system: a division of the nervous system that transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body. It is divided into the somatic and autonomic system. Somatic nervous system consists of nerves that control skeletal muscles and nerves that receive sensory input from the body. This is active with voluntary behaviour walking, reaching for something, etc. Autonomic nervous system responsible for regulating organ and gland activity.
