POL101Y1 Chapter 12: Week 1 Reading_ Leviathan
Document Summary
Chapter 13: of the natural condition of mankind as concerning their felicity, and misery. Man thinks he is wiser than others, but nature makes it so that all men are generally same in their ability (faculties of mind and body) When two men desire the same thing that the two of them cannot share, they become enemies. Man fears the other"s power to deprive him of life and liberty. Three principal causes of quarrel: competition (for gain) make selves master of other men"s persons, wives, children and cattle. Diffidence (for safety) protect and defend self"s property. Glory (for reputation) for a word, smile, different opinion, or any other sign of undervalue. In war every man is enemy to every man. Men live without other security than their own strength. No place for industry, because fruit thereof is uncertain. No culture of the earth no navigation or use of commodities imported by sea. Only continual fear, and danger of violent death.
