Document Summary

Amplitude: difference of air pressure between its greater value and its neutral value. Which describes the power transmitted by a wave. The frequency of a wave is the number of cycles per second. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. A piano has a low note of 27. 5hz and a high note of 3520hz. The amplitude of the complex wave equals the sum of the amplitudes of the components. The individual components of a complex wave are called harmonics. The first harmonic is called the fundamental harmonic. A spectrum is a display showing the frequency and the intensity (amplitude) of the harmonic components of a wave. A sound spectrogram is a visual representation of the spectrum of a sound. Darker areas of a spectrogram correspond to greater intensity in the acoustic signal. We hear the fundamental frequency as the pitch of a sound.
