LIN228H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Homorganic Consonant, Free Variation, Phoneme
Document Summary
An addition to a transcription to better understand articulation is called a diacritic. When we see a minimal pair, such as pit and kit, the /k/ and /p/ are then two separate phonemes. [voiceless stop] [aspirated] / initially in a stressed syllable. When two sounds occur in the same environment without causing a difference in meaning, they are in free variation. Both [p] and [ph] can be said in word final position, and they do not make the word any different by saying one vs the other, so they are in free variation and are allophones of the same phoneme. Broad transcription uses fewer symbols to represent the utterance and shows little phonetic detail. Many times voiced phonemes are partially voiceless when the occur at the beginning or end of a word. Consonants at the end of a word are in fact slightly longer than at the beginning (kick, lull, seen)
