Document Summary

Impressions of the natural world: landscape in aegean glyptic by olga. Krzyszkowska human perceptions of landscape are conditioned and informed by cultural context. Shaped by socio-economic factors, religious beliefs and collective artistic memory. In 19th c -> landscape dominates. (natural world) Aegean frescoes depicting the natural world show human figures and animals present and take center stage. Landscape in mm ii-iii glyptic floral characteristics were used decorative uses before. That still shows in the mm iii era but in late mmii, they are integrated into the picture. True landscapes were hard to capture since there was limited color palette. So distinctions between specific species weren"t made or accurate. Working with gold/silver gave engravers more control + finer detail. But they have poor survival rate because tomb robbers stole them. Ornamental motifs (still there) but also part of the picture + ^^ naturalistic manner. More development in this talisman style: motifs of floral + nature + animals (goats, birds, etc)
