Document Summary

What were they trying to do: in this paper, they used microsatellite data to estimate the phylogeny for 13 of. What did they conclude: they used that topology to investigate the monophyly of various groups and the patterns of beak shape and plumage colour evolution. You could go into more detail (wouldn"t leave points) How robust was the tree? (1) they didn"t use phylogenetic systematic methods for most of their reconstructions. Used mostly phenetic methods which cluster taxa based on overall similarity. But similarity can be based on homologous traits (plesiomorphies give no information about relationships) and homoplasious traits (which give false information) = phenetic analysis gives you unreliable hypotheses about relationships among taxa. They did use one phylogenetic method (maximum likelihood analysis) but they chose not to use this tree based on method to examine character and speciation. Maybe it invalidated one of their conclusions. November 4, 2016 (2) talked about how darwin"s finches were a monophyletic group.
