Document Summary
Chromosomes and genetic materials: two types of cells in any living organism: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Chromosomes: double-stranded dna molecule in nucleus of eukaryotic cells that carries genes and functions in the transmission of hereditary information: within the nucleus of eukaryotic cells are chromosomes. Mitosis: cellular division resulting in two identical daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent. Melosis: cellular division resulting in each daughter cell receiving half the amount of dna as the parent. Occurs during formation of egg and sperm cells in mammals. Gamete: a sex cell; a sperm or egg. Humans typically have 23 pairs of chromosomes in a diploid cell: a diploid cell is, a cell containing two sets of chromosomes, or one set inherited from each parent. Females have an xx set of sex chromosomes and males have an xy set of sex chromosomes. Each humans has two versions of every gene.
