VPHB68H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10-11: Cherry Bomb, Walter Gropius, André Breton
Document Summary
Surrealism: term created by apollinaire meaning new spirit . We are given the freedom of thought. To allow it to be ruled by others means that a person is not serving justice to themselves. Crazy people use their imagination without being limited by society"s rules that normal people know and respect. They look to their imagination for comfort. The writer believes that the realistic attitude was inspired by positivism & is hostile to intellectual & moral advancement. He says it created ridiculous books & insulting plays, & satisfies the lowest of tastes. He says that dreams are continuous and show signs of organization. Elements consisting of surrealism are just as strange to the creator as they are to anyone else. He defines surrealism as the psychic automatism in its pure state. It"s the actual functioning of uncontrolled thought which doesn"t have any aesthetic or moral concern. Childhood = effective, risk-free possession of oneself.
