Criminology: the study of crime causation, crime prevention, and the punishment and rehabilitation of offenders. Focus on social context within the criminal la is both created and applied. Relationship between crime and deviance: through social control and warrant some form of social intervention. Crime: concept used to designate particular behaviours or actions that require a formal response. Deviance: involves actions or behaviours that violate certain social norms, which may not be. Social norms: understood here as a given society"s shared and accepted standards and social. How these social norms are defined and by whom, example: joining a nudist colony, body against the law expectations piercings are all seen as deviant and canadian society. Crimes are understood as deviant but not all deviant acts are considered criminal. Assisted suicide is against the law but not seen as deviant. Becker argues that the act itself is not deviant but rather the peoples reactions to the specific act.
