A person uses a drug recreationally, for a socially acceptable purpose, but uses a drug instrumentally to experience the drug"s effects. Schedule v has relatively low abuse potential and legitimate medical purposes. Codeine is a key ingredient in prescription strength cough syrups. The lower the schedule number, the greater the potential for abuse. Ex. the united kingdom classifies drugs along 3 dimensions, where class a drugs cause the most harm and carry the stiffest penalties for possession and drug dealing. Criticism for controlled substances schedules falls into two general categories: appropriateness of drug scheduling and methods used to schedule drugs. Jack henningfield and neal benowitz ranked drugs according to abuse and addiction risk. Their results show that marijuana is the lease severe, whereas the other table above lists marijuana as a schedule i drug. Tolerance is an adaptation to a drug that requires a user to take escalating doses to achieve desired drug effects.
