PSYC62H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter ch.4: Analgesic, Tight Junction, Inotrope
Document Summary
Chapter 1 review: pharmacology consists of 2 subfields: Pharmacokinetics = how drugs move throughout body; has to do w/ how ppl use drugs (ex. smoking / snorting) different methods of use don"t change how drugs act in brain but do determine how quickly drug reaches brain. Pharmacodynamics = how drugs cause biological changes in body. Pharmacokinetic properties and drug passage through the body. 4 primary stages of drug"s pharmacokinetic properties: 1. Drug administered + absorbed into bloodstream > drugs diffuse through membranes + into organs > drugs metabolized by enzymes > any remaining drug / its metabolites eliminated from body. Absorption = passage of a drug from the site of administration to the bloodstream by passing through different membranes. Membrane that drug must pass through depends on drug"s route of administration. Absorbed through membranes in nasal passage / mouth. Injected under skin variable but more stable than oral admin. Convenient for patients + common for many drugs of abuse.
