Childhood self-control predicts health, wealth and public safety. Neuroscientists: it"s part of the frontal cortex. Psychologist: how self-control is developed in children. Health research: self-control predicts early mortality, mental disorders and unhealthy behaviour (overeating, unsafe sex etc. ) Sociologists: low self-control predicts unemployment and central in crime theory: opt-out: the idea is to automatically push people to eat healthy, save money and obey laws by making these the default. Iq and social class was controlled (because they both affect self-control: children"s self-control was studied at age 3, 5, 7, 9. Results: self-control levels were higher among girls, but health, wealth and public safety correlation with self-control were equal in both genders. Health: all participants health at 32y was measured in a lab: cardiovascular, respiratory, dental, sexual health and inflammatory. Findings: childhood self-control predicted adult health problems including alcohol and drug problems if they had poor self-control as a kid (but not mental disorders)
