Document Summary

Chapter 3 what are the functional units of the nervous system. In the pns they can be lost and replaced. Structure and function of the neuron: dendrites, the surface area of the cell is increased by its extensions into dendrites and an axon. Sits very close to the dendritic spine, not touching: almost touch = synapse = information transfer site between neurons. Interneurons association cells link up sensory and motor neurons: branch extensively to better collect information from sources, large brain = more interneurons, stellate cell v. small, star shaped, many dendrites around cell body. Hard to see axon because of all of the dendrites: pyramidal cell long axon, pyramid shaped body. Two sets of dendrites, one set projecting from the apex of the cell body and the other from the side. Carry information from cortex to the rest of brain + spinal cord: purkinje cell output cell with extremely branched dendrites that form a fan.
