PSYB65H3 Chapter 5: Chapter 5 Notes-2
Document Summary
Otto loewi experimentally set up an electrically stimulated heart in a salt bath, which was connected to another heart in another vessel (i. e. fluid was being transferred from one container to the other) The second heart was not electrically stimulated. The electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve decreased the beating rate of the first heart, but the second heartbeat also slowed. This suggested that the fluid transferred from the first container must have sent a message to. In further experiments loewi stimulated an accelerator nerve, and obtained speeded up heart rates. Epinephrine (or adrenaline) a chemical messenger that acts as a hormone to mobilize the body for flight/fight during times of stress and as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Norepinephrine (or noradrenaline) a neurotransmitter found in the brain and sympathetic autonomic nervous system; which accelerates heart rate in mammals. Neurotransmitters chemicals released by a neuron onto a target with an excitatory or inhibitory effect.
