Document Summary
Folk psychology: umbrella term for various assumptions and theories based on the everyday behavior of ourselves and others. Scientific psychology refines some of common sense assumptions of folk psychology. Study of human psychology has developed over three stages: 1950"s-1960"s:rapid progression fuelled by methods of psychophysics (studies relationship between sensation and stimulus) and experimental psychology. Foundational idea in cognitive psychology: the world contains information that is available to humans to process. Human are not just passive receivers and transformers of signal information but active selectors of information from the environment. Our nervous system can only handle so much information at one time and our hands, feet, eyes etc. can only be at one place at one time. The amount of info given by any event can be measured by bits. Bit: short for binary digits; the most basic unit of information.
