Document Summary

Chapter 5 the child"s growth: brain, body, motor. There is enormous variation in the rates at which children develop. Girls usually develop more rapidly than boys. The advent of new technology for assessing brain growth has helped refine, and even drive the developmental theory. Recall: rapid growth in the prenatal period. Birth: infants brain weight = of adult"s brain. 6 months: infant brain weight = of adults. 2 years: infant brain weight = of adults. Cerebral cortex: covering layer of human cerebrum (contains 90% of brains cell bodies) We don"t know how cells control complicated traits but we do know that specific functions can be traced to specific regions of the cortex. Glial cells: cells that surround and protect neurons also grow. They provide cells structural support, regulate their nutrients, and repair neural tissue: some are responsible for myelination: parts of neurons are covered with layers of myelin.
