2.8 The Cultural Context
• Cultural diversity - the differences which exist in an area/region b/c of heterogeneity and varying
backgrounds of the ppl living in that region
• Multicultural counselling and therapy - treatments w/ interventions which have been modified to
address issues, beliefs, and dialogues which characterize ppl from various cultures

• There r higher levels of mental health problems in Canadian Aboriginal communities + higher
suicides among Native youth
Origins of Mental Health Problems among Aboriginal People
• Drug abuse leads to child abuse (incl'ng sexual abuse)
• In the Aboriginals, these mental health problems are attributed to cultural discontinuity and
oppression b/c of institutional discrimination
o + higher rates of diabetes, obesity, and physical problems
• The Hutterites in Manitoba r isolated religious communities which have low levels of mental
illness
• The Anabaptist sect has the lowest prevalence of schizophrenia
• Healthy immigrant effect - the phenomenon that immigrants have comparatively lower rates of
health problems than Canadian-born members of the population
o b/c immigrants have to go thru a pre-screening process, this limits only healthy immigrants
to be allowed thru
o Immigr's had lower rates of depression + alcohol dependence in relation to Canadian-born
member of the popul'n
• This was more seen among the adults as to the children, adolescents and elderly
• Limited language proficiency was also a predictor of poor health status… along w/ not
friendly neighbors and having a difficult time accessing healthcare services

• Diathesis-stress paradigm - as applied in psychotherapy, diathesis-stress paradigm, is a view
which assumes that indiv's predisposed toward a specific mental disorder will be particularly
affected by stress and will then manifest abn behav
Diathesis and Stress in a Student w/ Borderline Personality Disorder
• Life stress… like being overwhelmed w/ work or living in a war zone is an imp part of the diathesis-
stress paradigm
o Key point of the D-S paradigm is that both diathesis and stress r necessary in the dvpt of
disorders
• e.g., someone w/ a biological predisposition for schizophrenia makes it likely for them
to dvp it w/ enough stress… yet someone w/ a low genetic risk isn’t as likely to dvp
schizophrenia… even w/ the stress
